K-Drama Lovely Runner Review: Missed Moments and Wasted Rays

Have you ever paused to think about the sun? The way it rises faithfully every day, spreading light, warmth, and life. Yet, we…rarely stop to notice. We rush through our routines, distracted and preoccupied, barely acknowledging the faithful rays shining down on us. We forget to bask in its presence. What if we’re doing the same thing with God's love?

The Faithful Sun and the Ever-Present Son

I’ve been thinking about a scene from episode 5 of the 2024 Korean series, Lovely Runner, where Im Sol reflects on how her relationship with Sun Jae had evolved. I can’t help but think about how much of a vivid mirror of our relationship with God it is.

We live our lives as we miss out on many things. To me, Sun Jae was like a star in the sky, unreachable and a universe away; at the edge of my teens, filled with memories I'd rather not recall. Sun Jae had been there all along, just a reach away. He breathed the same air as me everyday, gazed at the same sky, walked the same path, knew my name and saved me. Yet, I didn't realize it then. Only when I faced my past again did I realize how many moments of connection I had missed and lived through. Perhaps the moments I must not miss could be somewhere sending me signals as they constantly shine brightly. Not missing those signals, perhaps couldn't that be the reason why I came here and why you and I met again?

In the story of Lovely Runner, we see the lives of Im Sol and Sun Jae, two people who grew up near each other, never truly connected and life kept pulling them apart. They lived parallel lives and failed to cross in meaningful ways, unaware of the deep love and connection they could have shared and nurtured. Sol was busy trying to escape the pain of her own past, and Sun Jae, left unnoticed and unappreciated, grew lonely and depressed and took his own life.

When Sun Jae took his own life, it was a heartbreaking wake-up call for Sol. His absence jolted her into realizing how much she had missed—how she had ignored the signals of his love and presence all along. In the movie’s plot twist, she gets a miraculous chance to go back in time, to reconnect with Sun Jae, and to save him from despair by paying attention to what she’d once ignored.

But here’s the twist: unlike Sol, who gets to undo the past, we don’t have to rely on time travel to fix our broken moments. There is something far more powerful—God’s love for us, shown through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the cross.

Missing Signals and Divine Redemption

Just as Sun Jae felt unseen and unloved, many of us live our lives as though God is distant. As Sol reflects, we often feel like God was “…like a star in the sky, unreachable and a universe away…” But like Sun Jae was always close to Sol, God has always been near to you. He’s “…always been there all along, just a reach away.” He “knows your name, walks your path, and breathes the same air and gave His only Son, Jesus, to save you.” Yet, we’re often preoccupied with our own struggles and distractions. We overlook the signs of His love, the quiet moments of connection He offers every single day, while His love is right there, waiting to be noticed. Romans 10:8-10 reminds us that God's message is very close to us—closer than we often realize. His love is as close as the air we breathe and the sunlight that warms our skin.

Romans 10:8-10 reminds us:

But the faith-righteousness we receive speaks to us in these words of Moses: “God’s living message is very close to you, as close as your own heart beating in your chest and as near as the tongue in your mouth” And what is God’s “living message”? It is the revelation of faith for salvation, which is the message that we preach. For if you publicly declare with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will experience salvation. The heart that believes in him receives the gift of the righteousness of God—and then the mouth confesses, resulting in salvation.

God isn’t far away. He’s not "a universe away" like Im Sol thought Sun Jae was. He’s as close as the sunlight warming your skin on a cold morning. And just like the sun, His love shines faithfully—even when we fail to notice it.

A Savior Who Came to Save

Unlike Sun Jae, who fell into despair, Jesus chose to die for us. He didn’t need saving—He came to save us. His death wasn’t a result of hopelessness; it was the ultimate act of love. Jesus’s sacrifice on the cross was not just about His death—it was about offering us eternal life. Through His love, He offers us grace, forgiveness, and redemption. Where Sun Jae’s death was filled with sorrow and hopelessness, Jesus’s death was filled with hope and purpose. He came to redeem us, offering the promise of salvation through His Holy Spirit.

A God Who Redeems the Past

In Lovely Runner, Im Sol gets to travel back in time, running against time to try to undo the mistakes and missed connections of her past that she now regrets. But with Christ, we don’t need to live in regret. In real life, we don’t get time machines. But we do have something even greater: the grace of God.

No matter what our past looks like, God is here with us NOW – still loving us, wooing us and saving us, in Christ, who is already here, offering us salvation in this very moment. His love isn’t a missed signal or something we need to go back in time to experience. It’s here, shining brightly, waiting for us to open our hearts to Him. Unlike Sun Jae, who faded away in his despair, Jesus rose again—victorious over death. He’s not distant or unreachable. He is right here, offering us a relationship with Him, calling us to His embrace of love, restoration, and redemption.

God doesn’t just forgive our past—He redeems it now. He takes the missed moments, the wasted years, the heartbreak, and turns them into something beautiful. Joel 2:25 promises:

I will restore to you the years that the swarming locust has eaten.

Even if you’ve lived like God was far away, even if you’ve rushed through life missing the signals of His love and living a life without God and without hope, it’s not too late. His light is still shining, ready to restore, heal, and guide you. Paul reminds us in Ephesians 2:12-13 TPT

…You were without the covenants and prophetic promises of the Messiah, the promised hope, and without God. Yet look at you now! Everything is new! Although you were once distant and far away from God, now you have been brought delightfully close to him through the sacred blood of Jesus—you have actually been united to Christ!

The Weight of Sol’s Realization

One of the most heart-wrenching moments in Lovely Runner is when Sol realizes the depth of Sun Jae’s loneliness and pain. She looks back at all the moments she had ignored or dismissed—moments that could have made a difference, moments that could have saved him. Even if this mirrors your own life, don’t be discouraged and don’t be stuck in the weight of your guilt and regrets. We serve a God who doesn’t just restore the years we’ve wasted; He shields us from the harm of our past and gives us a new future. Psalm 23:3 reminds us:

He restores my soul.

God’s love doesn’t grow weary or distant. It’s constant, like the sun, always shining, always faithful, even in our faithlessness. In Lovely Runner, Sol missed the signals of Sun Jae’s love, but God’s love isn’t something we can miss in the same way. His love shines faithfully, like the sun, every day. Whether we notice it or not, He is always near, ready to restore, heal, and guide us. His love is as constant as the rays of the sun that shine regardless of whether we acknowledge them.

A Call to Pause

Let’s be real—life is busy. Between school, work, social media, and figuring out who you are, it’s easy to rush through the days without noticing what’s right in front of you. But in the rush, we often miss the most important things: the moments where God’s love shines through.

The sun rises every morning, no matter how distracted we are. And so does the Son of God. His light is there, ready to warm your heart and illuminate your path. So, take a moment today. Reflect. What moments of God’s love might you have overlooked? How can you slow down and open your heart to Him today? Just as the sun is faithful in its rise, God’s love is faithful and constant. Embrace it. Let it restore you, guide you, and fill your heart with the light that never fades.

Reflection

  • What moments of God’s love might you have overlooked recently?
  • How can you slow down and let His presence fill your life today?

The sun isn’t just a ball of fire in the sky. It’s a reflection of God’s love—faithful, constant, and life-giving. What’s even better than the sun? The love of God demonstrated by the sacrifice of the Son of God to save you. You don’t have to wait until it’s too late to notice the light He’s been shining in your life. Don’t go another day without receiving His love.

Let today be the day you stop missing the signals. Pause, feel the warmth of His love, and let His light restore you.

Flip The Script On Education: A Reflection In Celebration of the International Day of Education 2025

Image from Freepik Happy International Day of Education!  On today's episode of Flip The Script, we're flipping the script on education, in honour of the International Day of Education and we're doing that by shattering the myth that education only happens in schools and classrooms. I believe in holistic, out-of-school and transformative education that changes us and empowers us to change the world and I believe this is God’s heart for education. Education doesn't only happen in schools and classrooms but in all of daily life, and we should never confine or limit education to that.  My case study today is one of the most inspiring young people I’ve ever learned about: 19-year-old Gitanjali Rao who’s a science enthusiast and an inventor and already invented her first science-b...

What’s Eating You?

Photo source: Stockcake What Are You Eating? What's Eating You? A slow meditation for those who want to be nourished, not just inspired. Lately, I’ve been thinking a lot about food —but not just the kind that fills your stomach, but the kind that fills your soul. My dad used to say something I’ll never forget: “You can use good food to cure sicknesses.” It was wisdom passed down—his parents believed it. My mom and her parents too. They all knew the power of nourishment. They believe that if you eat well, your body naturally gets to heal, strengthen, and thrive. They knew this well and they lived by it. And it got me thinking: But what if the same is true for your soul? What if some of the fear, shame, anxiety, or spiritual fatigue you're feeling aren’t just about sin or stress or burnout—but about what we’ve been feeding or not feeding on ? Or what we’ve been starving from ? Or worse… what’s been poisoning us ? I’m learning that you can tell a lot about your spir...

Even Jesus Cooked Too: Meals Are Spiritual Spaces Where Jesus Meets Us

Photo source: ChatGPT Craving a Favorite Meal There’s something deeply satisfying about watching your favorite meal being made. The anticipation builds as you imagine the aroma, the texture, the first bite. I’ve found myself craving a favorite dish so intensely that I traveled a distance just to enjoy it. But that craving—that hunger—is more than just physical. It’s a mirror of something spiritual, something eternal. I think about how Jesus, my Lord and Savior, also cooked. That’s still such a beautiful, humbling thought to me. Even Jesus Cooked Too Did you know that Jesus made breakfast for His disciples after His resurrection? John 21 tells us that when the disciples had gone back to fishing, Jesus stood on the shore. H...
