Nighttime Feels Different...Here's Why

Lately, I’ve been thinking about how nighttime hits different—how it reveals so much about Jesus, His love, and the grace He showed us on the Cross.

We live in a world that constantly screams, “You’re not enough.” Every single day.

We wake up, push through, and still feel like we’re falling short. But at night? The voices get louder. The doubts hit harder.

“Did I do enough today? Am I enough?”

In some big cities, the grind never stops. But for most of us, nighttime means another day is wrapping up. The world slows down. People head home, unwind, and take a break from chasing success, money, or whatever they’re after. Yet even as we log off, close our laptops, or step away from work, our minds keep running.

Standing at the bus stop, waiting for a ride home, or just sitting in silence, we become more aware of our thoughts. And that’s when the whispers creep in: “You should’ve done more. You could’ve been better.”

We sigh, feeling the weight of the day settle on our shoulders and our nighttime routine says a lot about how we’re really doing but also hides pictures of Christ.

Let’s flip the script for a bit, shall we?

Dinner

You get home, and if you live with family, maybe you sit down for dinner, catching up over a meal. If you live alone, you either cook something quick or order takeout—just to get it over with. You’re not really present as you eat; it’s just another thing to check off the list.

Silence feels too loud, so you distract yourself. You put on a show, scroll through your phone, or keep working—anything to avoid sitting alone with your thoughts.

But even in those moments, your food is a quiet reminder of Jesus—always there, always providing, always nourishing you, even when you barely notice. Just like His love, steady and constant, whether you’re paying attention or not.

Shower

You step into the shower, and as the water hits your skin, it feels like it's washing away the physical mess and stress from the day. But your mind? It’s still running a million miles an hour. You’ve got a thousand thoughts racing, like you’re juggling tabs on your phone. Honestly, if phones were waterproof, I’m sure we’d all be scrolling in there too. Maybe you even play some music to drown out the noise. The water may be cleansing your body, but it’s not clearing the stress and exhaustion you feel inside.

But here’s the thing—your shower can actually point you to God’s grace. Like John wrote, “Of His fullness we’ve all received grace upon grace.” (John 1:16) Imagine yourself standing under a waterfall of grace—there’s more grace than you could ever need. And just like the water, God’s grace keeps you filled, washing away the junk inside, healing and restoring you.

That’s why we need to keep receiving God’s abundant grace and His gift of right standing with Him, like a constant flow. It’s how we actually reign in life, (Romans 5:17) even over the pressure to do more, be more. It’s how we break free from it—by following Jude’s advice to “keep ourselves in the love of God.” (Jude 1:21)

That’s basically the best life hack – just remain conscious of God’s love for you and keep reminding yourself that His grace is overflowing in your life and no matter how your day has gone, you’re always right with God. He is always with you, for you and He’ll never change His mind about you.

Your Bed

You crash into bed, totally wiped out, and the moment your head hits the pillow, you feel that sweet comfort of being held up by your bed and sheets. It’s like the world slows down, and you finally get to relax, your body sinking into the warmth and softness. As your eyelids close, the night takes over, and you drift off to sleep.

That feeling of just letting go? It’s like God’s love. Your bed is a reminder of His care. The Bible says, “The eternal God is your refuge, and underneath are His everlasting arms.” (Deuteronomy 33:27) His arms hold you, even when we sleep. This too, is grace.

Your Pillow (And Jacob’s Pillow)

Even your pillow hides a picture of God’s love for you. There’s a beautiful story about Christ hidden in the story of Jacob (Genesis 28:10-11). He had just messed up big time – He tricked his dad and stole his brother’s firstborn blessing. His brother was so angry and planned to kill him so he ran away from home. He ran for his life and while we was running, nighttime came and he found somewhere to sleep for the night. He found some stones and put them together to use as his pillows. I came across a really cool insight from The Passion Translation commentary that made me think even deeper about this:

Jesus is the anointed Stone on whom we lay our heads. To lay your head (thoughts and dreams) on him is to discover the beauty of God. When the anointing of Jesus fills our heads (minds), we will see heaven opened with fresh revelation and perceive the visions of God.

Jesus is the anointed Stone on whom we lay our heads. How beautiful is that? I’ve been thinking about this a lot since I first came across it. Jesus is the anointed Stone on which we lay our heads. We lay our cares and anxious thoughts on him and He gives us comfort and rest for our tired minds and souls.

Jacob was exhausted – He was literally running away after making a huge mess of things. He grabs some stones to use as pillows to lay his head but these stones are a picture of Christ. Even (and especially) when we’ve messed up, had a really long day of running or struggling, or suffering under the weight of our mistakes, failures, shame and guilt, we have a Stone – Christ. He’s the pillow where we can lay everything down: our guilt, shame, hopes, dreams, and fears.

And just like Jacob, when he laid his head and slept on that Stone, the God of grace appeared to him in a glorious way!

'He had a dream of a stairway securely fixed on the earth and reaching into heaven. And there were messengers of God ascending and descending on the stairway. And Yahweh stood beside him and said to him, “I am Yahweh, the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac. You are lying on the very ground that I will give to you and your descendants. They will become as numerous as the specks of dust on the earth, and they will extend their territory in all directions. Through you and your descendants, I will bless the whole world. Never forget—I am always with you and will protect you wherever you go. And one day I will bring you back to this land, for I will neither leave you nor fail to fulfill every word I have promised you.” When Jacob awoke from his dream, he was overcome with awe and said, “Yahweh is here! He is in this place and I didn’t realize it!” Terrified and overwhelmed, he said, “How awesome is this place! I have stumbled right into the House of God! This place is a portal, the very gate of heaven!”' - Genesis 28:12-17

That whole nighttime experience was a powerful moment of grace for Jacob. Pastor Joseph Prince shares about this amazing revelation in his sermon, Anointing Oil For Healing And Protection:

When Jacob left his house, he was afraid his brother would kill him. Remember that? He took the brother's birthright and he fled from his house. He landed in the place that we know later on as Bethel, the place of God. But he landed there and he took some stones and he slept on the stones, okay? And then next day, while he was sleeping, he had a dream and the Lord spoke to him. Don't forget, he'd just cheated his father, deceived his father. Cheated his brother. Morally, he's not in a good place. And yet, God was a God of grace to him, undeserved favor.

So whenever you find the Bible saying the God of Jacob instead of the God of Israel, it's always a phrase denoting his grace. The God of Jacob shall defend you. The God of Jacob shall help you. It's the God of grace. So Jacob had a dream, and God came to him and said, "I will keep you and preserve you wherever you go. I'll bless your seed and your generations. I'll provide for you". It's all, "I will, I will, I will". Unconditional promise from God. He had a dream of a ladder that went to heaven, amen, and angels going up and down. Later on, when Jesus came, in John chapter 1, you'll find Jesus saying, "Hereafter, you'll see the Son of man and angels ascending and descending upon him". Jesus is Jacob's ladder, the connection to heaven.

All of this went down at night for Jacob – during a season of loneliness, big mistakes, and fear, but also a season where he slept and had a powerful encounter with God. He saw Christ (the Stone and the Ladder) and experienced God’s grace – all in one night.

Even our night seasons are redeemed in Christ.

So, if today’s been rough – if you’ve messed up, felt ashamed, or are just plain exhausted – it’s okay. Tonight, as you lay your head on your pillow, remember that there’s a Stone you can rest on – Christ Jesus. You can lay down all the heavy thoughts and burdens weighing you down, and find true rest in Him. This is what He promises in Matthew 11:28-30:

'Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light.”'

Lastly, remember this: “God gives His beloved sleep” (Psalm 127:2). Sleep is a gift – a reminder that God’s love is always with you, working in you, and giving you rest from all the chaos and hard work. Rest in Him. Even when everything feels impossible, even when the night feels endless and full of questions, God’s grace meets us right there. It’s in the stillness of the night that we can truly feel His love – grace that covers everything, heals everything, and keeps us safe through every season.

You are enough. And in Christ, you always will be.

I hope you go to sleep every night holding on to that truth.

I thank you that I am now saved and I'm a member of your family. I ask that You fill me with the Holy Spirit and help me to know You more. In Jesus' name, amen.

Flip The Script On Education: A Reflection In Celebration of the International Day of Education 2025

Image from Freepik Happy International Day of Education!  On today's episode of Flip The Script, we're flipping the script on education, in honour of the International Day of Education and we're doing that by shattering the myth that education only happens in schools and classrooms. I believe in holistic, out-of-school and transformative education that changes us and empowers us to change the world and I believe this is God’s heart for education. Education doesn't only happen in schools and classrooms but in all of daily life, and we should never confine or limit education to that.  My case study today is one of the most inspiring young people I’ve ever learned about: 19-year-old Gitanjali Rao who’s a science enthusiast and an inventor and already invented her first science-b...

What’s Eating You?

Photo source: Stockcake What Are You Eating? What's Eating You? A slow meditation for those who want to be nourished, not just inspired. Lately, I’ve been thinking a lot about food —but not just the kind that fills your stomach, but the kind that fills your soul. My dad used to say something I’ll never forget: “You can use good food to cure sicknesses.” It was wisdom passed down—his parents believed it. My mom and her parents too. They all knew the power of nourishment. They believe that if you eat well, your body naturally gets to heal, strengthen, and thrive. They knew this well and they lived by it. And it got me thinking: But what if the same is true for your soul? What if some of the fear, shame, anxiety, or spiritual fatigue you're feeling aren’t just about sin or stress or burnout—but about what we’ve been feeding or not feeding on ? Or what we’ve been starving from ? Or worse… what’s been poisoning us ? I’m learning that you can tell a lot about your spir...

Even Jesus Cooked Too: Meals Are Spiritual Spaces Where Jesus Meets Us

Photo source: ChatGPT Craving a Favorite Meal There’s something deeply satisfying about watching your favorite meal being made. The anticipation builds as you imagine the aroma, the texture, the first bite. I’ve found myself craving a favorite dish so intensely that I traveled a distance just to enjoy it. But that craving—that hunger—is more than just physical. It’s a mirror of something spiritual, something eternal. I think about how Jesus, my Lord and Savior, also cooked. That’s still such a beautiful, humbling thought to me. Even Jesus Cooked Too Did you know that Jesus made breakfast for His disciples after His resurrection? John 21 tells us that when the disciples had gone back to fishing, Jesus stood on the shore. H...
